A deliberate retreat in Bali's less-travelled north

Bali Utara — Xendit sits at coordinates that place it firmly within the northern arc of the island, at an elevation that draws cooler air and longer, quieter mornings. This is not the Bali of Seminyak beach clubs or Ubud yoga retreats. It is a part of the island where the light falls differently, where the vegetation is denser and darker green, and where the local pace has remained largely unmolested by mass tourism.

The property is designed for two guests, which means every element has been scaled and considered for intimacy rather than capacity. The spatial logic is minimal: clean lines, natural materials, and a palette drawn from the surrounding landscape rather than imposed upon it. Where many properties in this region lean into ornamental Balinese carving and decorative excess, this retreat chooses restraint — a design decision that allows the landscape itself to provide the visual richness.

The surrounding neighbourhood of Singaraja and its satellite villages offers a genuine window into northern Balinese life. The Wednesday and Saturday markets at Singaraja are worth an early alarm. The Dutch colonial architecture along Jalan Erlangga tells a specific and underappreciated chapter of the island's history. The black-sand beaches at Lovina, less than twenty minutes from the property, are calm, uncrowded, and oriented toward sunrise rather than sunset — a distinction that matters at dawn.

Practically, the property is self-contained and well-equipped for a stay of several days. The proximity to Ngurah Rai International Airport is approximately three hours by road, making this a destination rather than a transit stop — which means the guests who find their way here tend to stay longer and leave slower.

Considered rooms for two

Main Bedroom Suite

King bed · private bath · garden aspect

The principal sleeping room is oriented for morning light and cross-ventilation. The king-size bed sits on a low timber frame, and the en-suite bathroom opens to a semi-private outdoor washing area screened by dense planting.

Living and Lounge

Open-plan · day seating · natural light

A single open volume connects the living area to the dining space, furnished with low seating and a ceiling fan overhead. The room is deliberately sparse, keeping sightlines clear and the sense of space generous for its footprint.

Kitchen and Pantry

Full equipment · gas hob · prep counter

A compact but fully equipped kitchen with a two-burner gas hob, refrigerator, and sufficient counter space for meal preparation. Filtered water and essential pantry staples are provided at arrival.

Outdoor Terrace

Covered · two chairs · hillside aspect

A covered terrace extends from the main living space and is furnished for two. It functions equally as a morning coffee spot, afternoon reading perch, and evening dining area when the air cools and the insects permit.

How a day unfolds here

You arrive in the late afternoon, when the northern light has turned amber and the air carries the particular coolness that distinguishes this latitude from the south. The property reveals itself gradually — a gate, a path, then the main structure opening onto its private outlook. There is no lobby, no check-in desk. Someone has left the door unlocked and a brief handwritten note on the kitchen counter.

Morning at Bali Utara begins before the heat does. The surrounding hillside activates early — birds, distant temple bells, the sound of a motorbike on a lane below. Breakfast is yours to compose from the well-stocked kitchen or from the fruit and bread you picked up the evening before at the local warung three minutes on foot from the gate. Coffee is made slowly. There is nowhere urgent to be.

Mid-morning is the time to move. The black-sand coast at Lovina is a short drive north, calm and largely tourist-free by the standards of Bali's southern beaches. The Banjar Hot Springs are close enough for an early visit and back before lunch. The roads here are narrow and shaded, and riding a scooter through them at this hour — before the midday warmth — is one of the more quietly pleasurable things the region offers.

Afternoons compress into shade and stillness. The property handles heat well. By early evening, the temperature has shifted again, and the light on the hills to the south takes on the quality that photographers spend entire trips chasing. Dinner is best found in Singaraja, where the night market does not cater to tourists and the portions are generous and inexpensive. You return to the property when it is dark and the stars above the northern coast are unobstructed.

Why the North Coast Remains Bali's Best Secret

While Seminyak builds upward and Canggu fills its remaining rice fields with coffee shops, the stretch of coast between Singaraja and Pemuteran has changed little in the past decade. A report from the quieter Bali that still exists for those willing to drive three hours north.

Six Hours in Singaraja's Markets and Colonial Streets

The Wednesday market at Singaraja begins before light and winds down by mid-morning. What happens in between — the produce, the traders, the Dutch-era godowns behind the harbour — is a more accurate portrait of Balinese daily life than anything the south offers tourists.

Dolphin Boats at Dawn and Other North Bali Mornings

The outrigger leaves Lovina beach at 6 AM. By 6:40, a pod of spinner dolphins has found the boat and is working the bow wake. By 8:30 you are back on shore and the day has not yet reached full heat. This is what early mornings in the north are for.

Frequently asked questions

What is the check-in time?

Check-in is from 3:00 PM. Early check-in may be available depending on prior guest departure — simply message the host at least 24 hours in advance to confirm. A self-check-in arrangement with a lockbox or key handoff can be coordinated if you are arriving late.

What is the check-out time?

Check-out is by 11:00 AM. Late check-out until 1:00 PM can sometimes be accommodated at no additional cost, subject to the next guest's arrival. Please confirm directly with the host the evening before departure.

How many guests can stay?

The property is configured for a maximum of two guests. This reflects the size of the bedroom, the capacity of the bathroom facilities, and the overall scale of the space — it is a retreat designed for a couple or two travelling companions, not a group.

Is parking available?

Yes. There is secure off-street parking for one car within the property gate. Scooter parking is also available. The nearest petrol station for scooter hire top-up is approximately 5 minutes by road.

Do you accept pets?

Pets are not accommodated at this property. The garden and surrounding area include resident wildlife and local cats that make introducing additional animals inadvisable. We appreciate your understanding.

How does direct booking work?

You communicate with the host directly, which allows for more flexibility on dates, early check-in, and local recommendations. Payment is processed securely and a confirmation is issued within a few hours of your request.

What is your cancellation policy?

Please refer to the cancellation terms shown at the time of booking. As a general guideline, cancellations made more than 7 days before arrival receive a full refund of the accommodation amount. Cancellations within 7 days may be subject to partial retention. Contact the host directly for extenuating circumstances.

How can I reach the host?

The host responds via the messaging system on this platform, and a WhatsApp number is provided upon booking confirmation. Response times are typically within a few hours. For urgent matters during your stay, a local contact number is included in the welcome note left at the property.
